Are we designing the magic out of creativity?

I’ll never forget one moment early in my career. I was stuck on a brief for a finance client to combine pension products with tennis — time ticking, ideas stalling, the client due in one hour. Then, out of nowhere, I overheard someone in the studio mutter the word: “Robot.” Bang! The idea hit me like lightning. I scribbled furiously for a few minutes (I can’t draw for shit), and the bones of the idea came together. “What do we call it?” I asked one of our creatives, who without missing a beat and only having seen my car crash of a scamp, replied: “The Servinator.” The client loved it. Job done.

A new Creative Thinking Qualification is born.

Back in 2017 a few passionate people sat around a table at a D&AD event hosted in Whitespace. We talked about the future of education and how schools and teachers were struggling to make Creativity, Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving part of the school’s curriculum. We were all frustrated that education was failing, falling back on pre-described notions of creativity being something that can be measured and graded, which in turn lead to generic lessons that gave children tasks to do instead of open-ended briefs or problems to overcome. In essence, they were being taught to be less creative.

Now we all know its good to be busy, but how do we know when it is too busy? How busy is too busy? What is good pressure? What is bad pressure?
